DRIVING REGULATIONS IN GIBRALTAR
Laws and regulations in Gibraltar are based on English law, except for the fact that Gibraltar changed to driving on the right back in 1929. The major reason has been to avoid accidents with vehicles and cars from Spain.
The minimum age requirement to drive motorcycles and cars in Gibraltar is 17 years. Medium sized vehicles can be driven with the age of 18 and lorries and buses at 21. EU citizens are allowed to drive on their EU licence until it expires. Non residents living in Gibraltar have to get a Spanish driving license after a maximum of one year.
Gibraltar's speed limit is generally 50 kph unless a traffic sign indicates otherwise. You won't be able to drive much faster than that most of the time because of the narrow streets and many pedestrian crossings.
The road tax in Gibraltar has to be paid to the Government. All drivers who have a vehicle which is used on a public road need vehicle insurance and have to pay the road tax. To drive with dipped headlights at night and to wear seatbelts is compulsory.
Non-residents who want to visit Gibraltar with their own car can import it without payment of duty provided they take it out when they leave and only stays in Gibraltar temporarily. Driving license and up to date registration documents are necessary during a stay on the Rock.
